To achieve this goal, we analyze market demands, expand the offer of products and services with sustainability characteristics and maintain our high quality standards that characterize us.
For society: To respond to the needs of housing, improvement of quality of life, inclusion and infrastructure, in order to facilitate the development of sustainable, intelligent and interconnected cities that respond to the current challenges facing the planet.
For the company: To respond efficiently to new market dynamics and position ourselves as industry leaders through innovation.
During 2021 we had revenues of US$1.515 billion from products with sustainability features, almost doubling our goal of US$800 million in 2030. For Argos, the challenges facing humanity are an opportunity to rethink ourselves as a company. We believe in our capacity to provide solutions to our customers in a responsible way for the planet. This is why, during 2021, we focused our efforts on the review and detailed classification of our Green Solutions portfolio, resulting in this great achievement for our clients.
Digital Solution
Firm in our purpose of delivering extraordinary solutions to clients and becoming their best allies, through Argos ONE we integrate the different digital services that we offer them, simplifying and streamlining their interactions with our Company through an omnichannel experience that orchestrates the complete process from taking the order to payment.
Industrialized Solutions
Cementos Argos has technically and commercially developed Modular Concrete Solutions in the country, an Off-Site construction system, which stands out worldwide for the numerous success stories that constantly demonstrate the categorical benefits offered by these solutions including high construction performance, efficiencies, profitability, sustainability and social impact.
We Increased the Market for ARGOS “PORTLAND LIMESTONE CEMENT (PLC) TYPE IL”
We seek to respond to a changing world through innovation and the delivery of solutions that contribute to sustainable construction. For this reason, in 2021 our United States regional office set out to expand the market for this portfolio product, seeking - by 2022 - to increase the production, promotion and sale of Argos PLC Cement.
To achieve our objectives, we focus our efforts on four lines:
We are committed to respecting, protecting and promoting human rights; for this reason, we have a policy approved by our Senior Management that guides the Company's management to monitor the potential risks resulting from our operations. As key reference frameworks, this policy has the International Bill of Human Rights, the fundamental principles and rights established in the Declaration of the International Labor Organization, in addition to the guiding principles of the United Nations (UN) Human and Business Rights and the laws of the countries where we are present. This is the main tool through which, supported by a due-diligence process and based on the Human Rights Management System, we monitor the risks and impacts that the activities could cause our Stakeholders. We manage these consequences when they occur and we maintain clear and transparent communication with them.
For society: To raise awareness among Stakeholders to prevent actions that go against human rights and that may endanger their integrity.
For the company: To manage risks in terms of Human Rights in operations and, thus, promote our pillars of culture and maintain relationships of trust with all Stakeholders.
In accordance with our express commitment in the Human- Rights Policy and knowing the reality of our operations and the challenges posed by the diversity of origins and cultures that our Organization has, we have a Risk-Management process that allows monitoring the behaviors of the Company or our suppliers that were identified as critical and that put people at risk who interact with the Company from any role.
This process has four main steps:
At Argos we create value by contributing to the progress of the regions where we are present, facing the current challenges of society and transcending our role in the territory. The relationship with the communities is framed in the responsibility of our actions, in the respect and promotion of human rights and in the construction of relationships of trust that generate development opportunities to promote joint growth.
For society: To generate development opportunities to increase the quality of life and improve social conditions in the territories where we are present because we are convinced that as communities grow, the Company develops in a healthy, safe environment. Likewise, to sustainably address the long-term development needs of communities, seeking an equitable win-win relationship without creating a culture of dependency.
For the company: To build relationships of trust with the communities in order to support the achievement of Corporate Objectives, the continuity of each of our operations and uphold the Company's reputation by adopting the best practices in community matters.
Healthy Homes
This consists of the improvement of homes through the replacement of dirt floors with concrete floors and - in some cases - through adaptations of bathrooms and kitchens.
This initiative, implemented in Colombia, is developed under a joint-work model of Cementos Argos, the communities and other allies such as local mayors, social ministers and educational institutions, such as the National Learning Service (Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje, SENA), due to the fact that basic training in construction is included to family members in order to leave the installed capacity in the territory and prepare them for a self-construction process.
Outstanding Achievements 2021:
More than 1,400 families in territories such as Cartagena, Barranquilla, Toluviejo, Sogamoso, Sonsón, Mulaló, among others, improved their quality of life thanks to the Healthy Homes Program and the contribution of cement. Within these, we highlight the 239 homes intervened in Medellín and Yumbo.
Launch of the Campaign “Let's Change Lives”, with which COP 200 are collected for each bag of gray general-purpose cement sold by Argos
We have a Community Management System, made up of six elements that interact with each other to promote a strategic, articulated, aligned and focused management of the relationship with the communities.
Comprehensive health and safety are the most important values in our operations. Every day we make consistent progress towards achieving ZERO incidents and ZERO occupational illnesses, aware that our commitment transcends beyond our facilities and materializes in the well-being of everyone around us.
For society: To contribute to the development of Safe and Healthy Territories, sharing our experience through our employees, contractors, and their families as the main spokespersons for the way we do things based on our values.
For the company: To accompany and recognize the behaviors, practices and initiatives of employees and contractors to remain safe, healthy and achieve the objectives set out in the SISO 2025 strategy.
Vaccinations
With the biosafety protocols very well established and operating strictly since the previous year, the management of COVID-19 during 2021 focused on people, defining vaccination as the main control strategy. Thus, actions were established to quickly guarantee Employee access to vaccines in the different countries. Along these lines, we organized technical-information sessions with experts, mass vaccination sessions in conjunction with local Governments, direct acquisition of biologicals where the legislation allowed it, and channels were activated for the individual registration of the application of doses. By 2021, the Company has 5,625 fully vaccinated employees.
“Safe Points” Checkpoints
Due to the acceptance of the “Safe Points” Program, alliances with local authorities and unions that intervene on the roads continued, to accompany drivers by raising awareness about self-care and the care of other road actors. Reinforcing the basic factors of mobility in driving, analyzing both the driver’s physical and emotional conditions, the technical-mechanical conditions of the vehicle, the road infrastructure and the safety recommendations for the prevention of incidents, all of this was carried out in more than 22 Safe Points, in which 1,596 road actors were approached (passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, freight transport drivers and public service).
We continue to implement our Safety and Health strategy consistently to achieve our Goal of ZERO, ZERO Incidents and ZERO occupational illnesses, focusing on the following 4 pillars:
At Argos we inspire transformation through the growth of our talent. We encourage the development of passionate people with the purpose of making housing and infrastructure construction dreams come true to consolidate prosperous and inclusive communities in all the territories where we are present. Similarly, our culture pillars represent the values that enable commitment to change and achievement of objectives to achieve sustainable results and superior growth.
Additionally, we attract, retain and develop our talent through programs aimed at strengthening the employee’s experience and promoting leadership styles allied with sustainable growth. All of the above within the framework of labor practices of the highest standards where inclusion, respect for diversity, the right to free association and the integral development of people are fundamental and that guide our actions.
For society: To transform our society through the development of people who are aware of their environment, who transcend and create value with each of their actions. To attract, retain and develop employees willing to make a difference in the societies they impact. The foregoing under criteria of diversity and inclusion and behaviors that transcend our operations and generate well-being and positive impact in the communities.
For the Company: To consolidate a great team that embraces change as an opportunity and creates shared value in collaborative work environments. We do this by attracting, retaining and developing the best talent to face current and future challenges. To strengthen talent management as an ally for business growth that provides innovative solutions in a clear balance between profitability, social development and environmental impact.
Implementation of the Hybrid Work Models
During 2021, gradual returns to workplaces began. For the Administrative staff, this meant the adoption of a hybrid model, adjusted to the country’s regulations or based on a model of Innovation at Work, for those countries that did not have such regulations.
A total of 674 people participated in telework, distributed by countries, thus: 575, Colombia; 36, Honduras; 51, Panama; 12, the Dominical Republic.
Strengthening Virtual Training
During 2021, the Virtual Training Program was strengthened through different platforms and internal trainers.
We achieved a total of 278,022 hours of training, of which 117,415 were virtual, representing 42% of the training total.
We want to provide the best experience to employees to achieve the fulfillment of our goals and our higher purpose. To do this, the Talent Management Strategy focuses its work on three lines:
At Argos we are aware of the evolution in the criticality of the effects of climate change over time, of the measures promoted both at a global and local level, by the public and private sectors to face this challenge of humanity, and of the crucial role that our Company has in the construction-materials sector in taking innovative, forceful and sustained actions that favor both mitigation and adaptation to climate change. Likewise, we recognize that climate change is an opportunity to promote and boost sustainable construction and, thereby, contribute to the creation of social value in the geographies where we operate.
For this reason, through our Climate Change Strategy, we have committed to acting throughout our value chain, mitigating direct and indirect CO2 emissions, generating the necessary capacities to adapt to their impacts, and researching and developing initiatives to advance in solutions aimed towards the capture, storage and use of carbon; thus seeking to contribute to the competitiveness and resilient growth of both the Company and its Stakeholders.
Together with the most important companies in the cement- and concrete-production sector in the world, we have adhered to the Climate Ambition Plan promoted by the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) to offer carbon-neutral concrete to society by 2050.
During 2021, we built the Technical and Financial Roadmap to reduce CO2 emissions and reach the goal set for 2030; the result of this Roadmap was the sum of efforts from multiple Company Departments that were aligned with the OKR (Objective Key Result) established from the Presidency and that called for action to “Become leaders in the industry in mitigation and climate-change adaptation in the next three years”.
Likewise, the mandate was established to constantly monitor compliance with the reduction goals, carry out a cyclical review of project validity or optimization, and evaluate the inclusion of new projects within the Board of Directors’ Sustainability and Corporate Governance Committee, the Climate-Change Cell and the committees of the three Regions, all in favor of fulfilling the commitments made with our Stakeholders.
To date, we have approved the premises and technical considerations that mobilize the levers to reduce CO2 emissions(1), the short-term resources within the company's CapEx, as well as the internal reserve of resources for the medium term,(2) (which guarantee the annual allocation of resources to fulfill the Roadmap).
The Climate-Change Strategy guides our actions in mitigation, adaptation to the impacts of climate change and research and development of technologies for carbon capture, use and storage (CCUS), allowing us to minimize risks and enhance opportunities associated with this phenomenon. This strategy permeates the entire value chain and was built with scenarios to mitigate CO2 emissions, with the possibilities of optimizing processes, and with analyses to identify and assess risks (physical and transition) and opportunities for innovation and sustainable growth that the construction-materials sector brings us.
The action framework of the Climate-Change Strategy considers:
Natural capital, understood as the stock of renewable and non-renewable natural resources that confer characteristics to different ecosystems, is essential for developing and maintaining prosperous and healthy economies, as well as for the health and well-being of people. At Argos we know the powerful role that companies can play in ecosystems. For this reason, we are aware of the importance not only of having outstanding performance in the management of natural resources, but also of striving to achieve a net benefit, so that these valuable ecosystem services last over time, not only for our direct operations, but also for our value chain, the people and ecosystems that depend on them, as well as future generations through the proper understanding and management of significant risks and impacts in the geographies where we operate.
For society: To have high environmental performance in the management of water and biodiversity through activities that incorporate elements such as prevention, mitigation, correction and compensation of our negative impacts and that allow enhancing positive impacts in order to guarantee the availability of valuable environmental services, for current and future generations.
For the company: To achieve a positive net impact on biodiversity and carry out appropriate water management in an integrated manner through the application of the Argos Environmental Strategy, the Impact Mitigation Hierarchy, the management of risks and opportunities and the commitment of no net deforestation and not operating in protected areas or those declared as having high value for biodiversity, in order to create sustainable value, promote economic growth, increase the Company’s resilience and ensure the flow of the ecosystem goods and services necessary for our operation.
Five of our cement plants and eight terminals in the US region are Wild Life Habitat Council (WHC) certified.
Our US region demonstrated its commitment to biodiversity conservation by obtaining and maintaining 13 conservation certifications from the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) for its initiatives to conserve habitats for valuable species such as bats, chickadees, birds and butterflies and to promote pollination, among other ecological services.
We obtained credit linked to environmental, social and corporate governance practices.
Together with Bancolombia, we signed a three-year, 135 billion pesos financing agreement in which the interest rate is linked to the performance of three indicators, including specific water consumption in the cement business.
The Water and Biodiversity pillar of our Environmental Strategy, aligned with the GCCA Biodiversity Policy, is our guide and roadmap for the adequate management of natural capital. Our goal is to have a net positive impact on biodiversity and integrated water management. For this, we focus on four lines of action:
We are committed to reducing our emissions through actions that achieve more efficient processes and the implementation of abatement measures, contributing to good air quality in the places where we operate. Our cement-, concrete- and aggregate-production processes generate punctual and scattered particulate matter (PM) emissions, as well as emissions of sulfur oxides (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the clinkering furnaces of the cement plants.
For society: To contribute to mitigating the impact on air quality in the areas where we operate, acting responsibly and promoting relationships of trust with our Stakeholders.
For the company: To develop more efficient processes that allow us to reduce our atmospheric emissions and contribute to responsible production, complying with local regulations in the countries where we operate and – in some cases – going beyond compliance with said regulations, contributing to the profitability of the business and preparing to face future challenges.
Plan to Prevent and Control Dispersed Emissions
We continue to implement mitigation measures to control fugitive emissions, which include the construction of enclosures for the storage of materials and fuels and the paving of roads, internal roads and continuous irrigation.
Replacement of the Dust-Collector Filters of the Concrete Plant Suriname
We changed 64 dust-collector filter bags of our Concrete Plant in Suriname to improve the extraction system of this material in the facility; This process required a large investment and allowed a significant reduction in dispersed emissions of particulate matter.
We position ourselves as strategic allies for the development of the territories where we are present, directly and through the empowerment of our value chain. We do it through the construction of housing and sustainable infrastructure that enables the closing of socioeconomic gaps, the generation of employment, the improvement of the quality of life and the reduction of the impacts generated.
For society: To sustainably respond to the growing demand for housing and infrastructure of the world population with the aim of improving people's quality of life, interconnecting regions and developing innovative solutions.
For the company: To be strategic allies of the actors in our value chain in order to maintain the Company's leadership in the market, ensure its competitiveness over time and increase the generation of sustainable value.
Vías del Nus Road Concession - Antioquia, Colombia
In line with our higher purpose, participation in this project has a great impact for the communities in the north of the Department of Antioquia. It is projected that it will generate an important socio economic contribution in more than 400 thousand inhabitants of Maceo, Santo Domingo, Cisneros, Girardota and Copacabana.
We participated in this project as cement suppliers, delivering close to 160,000 tons.
In turn, this project consumed 400,000 cubic meters of concrete on site.
We Participated in the Construction of the Largest Highway in Virginia, in the United States
Along with other Virginia contractors, we participated in the construction of the Hampton Road Bridge Tunnel (HRBT) expansion by supplying cement and supplemental cementitious material (Supercem Grade 100 slag). This project, which has a duration of five years and involves an investment of nearly USD 3,800,000, aims to extend the current four-lane stretches along almost 10 miles of the I-64 corridor in Northfolk and Hampton with the construction of two twin tunnels under the bay. In total, for this work, we will deliver 93,932 tons of cement and 91,814 tons of slag.
Inauguration of Ariane 6, a Space-Launch Platform Built with Our Cement in French Guiana
On September 27, the inaugural flight of Ariane 6 took place, a marvel of modernity in the middle of the French Guiana jungle. For this project, built by the French company Eiffage, we shipped a total of nearly 54,500 tons of three different types of cement with high levels of resistance and advanced technical requirements, among which road binder stands out, a stabilizer solution for land that is used for the first time in a work of this type, and some sulfate-resistant cements.
Our cement was used in the construction of all the necessary works for the rocket-launch platform, as well as for a 90-meter-high mobile base (the rocket will be 70 meters high), the rocket-assembly building and tracks, numerous structures for electrical networks, pipes, etc.
We are committed to the role we have as a Company in the achievement of the 2030 Agenda goals, the consolidation of territorial development plans where we operate, and the economic reactivation of the countries affected by the pandemic. Therefore, we focus our efforts in the development of sustainable housing and infrastructure projects that contribute to closing socioeconomic gaps, generating employment under safe conditions, environmental protection, and investment in improving people’s health systems and quality of life.
Our work unfolds in three large lines:
Cities for everyone:
With nearly 54% of the world population living in urban areas, the pandemic made inequality of those who live in the cities of the world
manifest. Nearly 90% of the COVID-19 cases are concentrated in the urban
centers that have, among others, challenges associated with access to basic services and decent housing conditions. For this reason, we work together with our value chain to develop projects that benefit the lessfavored population, facilitate access to housing, and promote development in
the areas of influence.
Interconnected cities
The need to connect urban areas with rural areas to expand the coverage
of basic services, such as health, has been a priority of developing countries
since before the pandemic. Therefore, during 2020, we continued working on creating innovative solutions that allow us to be present in the large projects of the countries and territories where we are present.
Intelligent cities
In recent years, the acuteness of the effects of climate change became the
risk of greatest impact to the world. Therefore, in the global stage, a need
has grown to transition to a low-carbon economy, an opportunity that becomes more relevant amid post-pandemic recovery scenarios and the effort we are making as a Company to generate new business models that respond to environmental and social challenges. For this reason, our Climate-Change Strategy includes actions aimed at mitigating the impacts associated with our productive processes, adapting our operating model and innovating from the identification of optimization opportunities.
Supplier management is a fundamental pillar of our Supply Chain Strategy; it seeks to build and strengthen relationships with strategic allies who have the ability to contribute to the Company in terms of efficiency, productivity, customer service and innovation. For this reason, we carefully select our suppliers, transfer knowledge to promote their development, promote good practices and recognize those who are an example of sustainable, innovative, safe and responsible management.
For society: To develop our suppliers, promote transparent practices and responsible conduct, to improve the productivity and competitiveness of our society and support the construction of a better future.
For the company: To seek to add value throughout the Company's supply chain, from the purchase of goods and services to the delivery of products to clients. Through the mitigation of risks and potentiation of opportunities, the implementation of good contracting practices and service excellence, we create relationships of trust and turn suppliers into business allies.
We Signed a Financing Agreement Tied to the Three ESG Indicators, One of Them on Supplier Evaluation
This operation represents a milestone for our Company because - in addition to evaluating environmental performance - it involves dealing with our suppliers in this type of credit. This is part of our interest in developing an increasingly sustainable value chain.
The transaction recognizes our commitment to our Sustainability Strategy and makes it possible to obtain a competitive advantage in financing linked to compliance with ESG indicators, on which we have been working for more than a decade. Every year we will have to report our progress.
Our management is divided into five stages:
Additionally, we have:
Contracting manual: transparent action framework that guides the negotiation and contracting of our suppliers to allow the process to be agile, make use of best practices and carry out adequate risk management.
Code of conduct for suppliers: in which we define the principles and behaviors that we expect from our allies in terms of respect for human rights, protection of workers, environmental management, business ethics and responsible business practices.
We are convinced that ethics and integrity are fundamental and non-negotiable; that is why we live by these principles, integrating them into our operations, processes, and strategy, thus generating value responsibly for our business, our Stakeholders, and for society. Through the Global Governance and Compliance Program, our ethics and business conduct system, we seek to promote that our actions are consistent with the pillars of corporate culture and integrity as the guiding principle of our business activity.
For society: To promote transparent, competitive, and sustainable business environments that strengthen trust and ethics in business, generating positive impacts for the market and society.
For the company: To promote that our actions are consistent with the pillars of culture and that integrity is the inspiring principle of all members of the Organization. This is how we consolidate ourselves as a competitive, reliable company in the eyes of investors and other Stakeholders.
Strengthening the Transparency Line
We continue to strengthen our mechanisms for reporting wrongdoing.
The strengthening process included:
Of a total of 206 reports received in 2021 through the Transparency Line, 104 cases closed with administrative or corrective actions.
Money Laundering and the Financing of Terrorism Risk Management
We continue to strengthen our technological tools to prevent money laundering and the financing of terrorism risks, for the identification of early warnings.
In 2021, we achieved:
We have voluntarily adopted a self-regulatory framework that confirms our commitment to business ethics as a way to promote transparent practices that contribute to the development of competitive environments. This framework* incorporates mandatory principles of ethics and conduct:
For the proper implementation and application of these guidelines, the strengthening of the ethical culture, the prevention and control of incorrect actions, our Board of Directors approved the Global Governance and Compliance Program (GGCP, in Spanish). The program structure incorporates international best practices to evaluate compliance programs, such as ISO 37001, ISO 19600 and the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) guidelines. The program has the following scope:
Likewise, it systematically groups together the activities carried out to promote integrity in the Company's actions, its employees, and members of the value chain, which allow the updating and permanent strengthening of the program. Operating Scheme:
We materialize our Corporate Strategy through actions aimed at the efficient use of resources, the improvement of our financial flexibility and the maximization of income generation and business profitability. We focus on the application of efficient, safe production processes and circular economy models, on the diversification of energy management models and on the efficient management of the supply chain.
For society: To provide solutions and products that meet the needs of our clients through the responsible, appropriate use of resources and the incorporation of raw materials and alternative energy sources.
For the company: To guarantee business sustainability, optimize working capital and capital investments, reduce costs and the level of indebtedness, and mitigate risks regarding the availability of resources necessary for our operation and the emergence of new business realities, environmental requirements and new regulations.
To manage the efficiency and productivity of our businesses, we define key objectives and goals, which seek agility, flexibility and profitability, through the following lines:
