En línea con su compromiso con la sostenibilidad y la reducción de la huella de carbono en la industria, Cementos Argos se suma como aliado industrial a un proyecto de investigación innovador y ambicioso que busca reducir las emisiones de carbono en la producción de cemento mediante el desarrollo de tecnologías avanzadas de calentamiento eléctrico.
This project, supported by the Innovation Fund with an investment of nearly 21 million Danish kroner (DKK), approximately 3 million U.S. dollars, has been underway since September 1, 2024, and brings together a group of renowned institutions and companies, including FLSmidth Cement (project leader and commercial partner), the Danish Technological Institute (DTI), Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), Aalborg University (AAU), Cementos Argos, and European Energy (EE).
Innovation for Sustainability
Cement production is one of the largest sources of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, accounting for between 7% and 8% of global emissions. A large portion of these emissions comes from the calcination process, where limestone is converted into calcium oxide and releases CO2.
Argos’ goal with this project is to participate in the development of new electric limestone calcination technologies that are compatible with carbon capture, utilization, and storage. The company is providing industry data and limestone from its Cartagena plant, with the aim of becoming potential users of the technology. These solutions will enable the cement industry to move toward a more sustainable future and strengthen the transition to low-emission industrial processes.
Innovative Technologies for Cleaner Production
The project explores two electric calcination technologies: infrared heating and induction heating. Both allow precise control of the process and temperature, ensuring uniform clinker quality, a key component in cement production. This is essential to meet global construction standards and customer expectations.
As the next step in the project, prototypes of both technologies will be developed to assess their feasibility in a pilot plant and continue progressing toward more sustainable cement.
